The Complete Used Car Buying Checklist

Buying a used car is one of the biggest purchases most people make, yet many buyers skip essential checks that could save them thousands. Follow this checklist before you hand over any money.

Before You Visit

  • Run a car check — Use MOTChecker to verify MOT history, tax status, mileage records and vehicle details before you even see the car.
  • Research the market value — Check car valuations so you know what a fair price looks like.
  • Verify the seller — Ask to see the V5C registration document. The seller's name and address should match.

Document Checks

  • V5C logbook — Check it's genuine (look for the watermark) and that the VIN matches the car.
  • Service history — A full service history adds value and gives confidence. Cross-reference mileage at each service with MOT records.
  • MOT certificate — Check the current MOT status and review past advisories. These tell you what's wearing and likely to need attention soon.
  • Outstanding finance — A car with outstanding finance technically belongs to the finance company and could be repossessed from you.

Physical Inspection

  • View in daylight — It's much harder to spot paint defects, rust and damage in the dark or rain.
  • Check panel gaps — Uneven gaps between body panels can indicate previous accident damage and poor repairs.
  • Inspect tyres — Check tread depth, look for uneven wear (which suggests alignment or suspension problems) and check all four tyres are the same brand and size.
  • Look underneath — Check for oil leaks, rust on structural areas and exhaust damage.
  • Open every door, boot and bonnet — Check hinges, locks and catches all work smoothly.

Test Drive

  • Drive for at least 15 minutes on different road types.
  • Listen for unusual noises from the engine, gearbox and suspension.
  • Test the brakes firmly — the car should stop straight without pulling.
  • Check all electrics: windows, mirrors, air conditioning, heated seats, infotainment.
  • Watch the temperature gauge — overheating can indicate head gasket issues.

After the Sale

  • Transfer the V5C to your name within 5 days.
  • Arrange insurance before driving away.
  • Save the car to your MOTChecker garage to track MOT and tax expiry reminders.
