As electric vehicle ownership grows rapidly in the UK, one of the most common questions from new EV owners is whether their car needs an MOT. The short answer: yes, but with a few differences.
When Does an EV Need Its First MOT?
Electric cars follow the same rules as petrol and diesel vehicles: the first MOT is required when the car is three years old, and then annually after that. There are no exemptions based on fuel type.
What's Different in an EV MOT?
No Emissions Test
The most obvious difference is that EVs skip the exhaust emissions test entirely, since they have no exhaust system or tailpipe. This also means there's no check on the exhaust condition, catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter.
What's Still Checked
Everything else is tested as normal:
- Tyres — Tread depth, condition and pressure (note: EV tyres often wear faster due to the extra weight and instant torque)
- Brakes — Pads, discs, fluid level and performance
- Lights — All external lighting and indicators
- Steering and suspension — Condition and function
- Windscreen and wipers — Damage and wiper condition
- Seatbelts — All fitted belts
- Body and structure — Corrosion and damage
- Horn, mirrors and number plates
Additional EV-Specific Checks
- Battery — Must hold enough charge to start the vehicle and power at least four headlamps.
- Charging port — Checked for damage or signs of electrical faults.
- Regenerative braking — Heavy use can affect brake fluid levels, which are checked.
How Long Does an EV MOT Take?
Typically 45 minutes to an hour, slightly shorter than combustion engine cars since the emissions test and some engine-related checks are skipped.
EV MOT Tips
- Check your tyres regularly — EVs are heavier than equivalent combustion cars, so tyre wear can be faster.
- Use your conventional brakes occasionally — if you rely entirely on regenerative braking, the discs can corrode from lack of use.
- Ensure your 12V auxiliary battery is in good condition — even EVs have a small 12V battery for systems like lights and wipers.
