Digital Driving Licences: What UK Drivers Need to Know

The UK government has confirmed plans to introduce digital driving licences, with a target of full implementation by 2027. Your licence will soon exist primarily online through the GOV.UK Wallet app. Here's what we know.

What Is a Digital Driving Licence?

A digital driving licence is an electronic version of your photocard licence, stored on your smartphone through the GOV.UK Wallet app. It will contain the same information as your physical card — your photo, licence categories, restrictions and expiry date.

When Is It Happening?

The rollout is happening in stages:

  • 2026 — The GOV.UK Wallet app is being developed and tested
  • 2027 — Target for full digital licence availability
  • Physical cards remain valid — There are no plans to scrap the plastic card

Will I Still Need a Physical Licence?

Yes, for now. The digital licence will be an addition to your physical card, not a replacement. You'll be able to use either to prove your identity and driving entitlements. However, the direction of travel suggests that over time, the digital version may become the primary record.

What You Need to Do Now

While the digital licence isn't here yet, it's important to ensure your DVLA records are up to date:

  • Update your address — Failure to update your licence address is a fine of up to £1,000
  • Report medical conditions — Any condition that affects your driving must be declared to the DVLA
  • Renew on time — Photocard licences expire every 10 years (every 3 years for over-70s)
  • Check your entitlements — Make sure your licence shows the correct vehicle categories

Benefits of Going Digital

  • Always with you — No more forgetting your licence at home
  • Instant updates — Address changes and renewals reflected immediately
  • Harder to forge — Digital licences are more secure than physical cards
  • Easier verification — Employers, car hire companies and insurers can verify your licence instantly

Keep Your Car Documents in Order Too

While your driving licence is going digital, your car's MOT and tax status are already online. Use MOTChecker to check your car's MOT and tax status anytime, and save your car to your garage for automatic expiry reminders so you never get caught out.
